Without our Girlguiding Leaders, guiding simply would not happen.
Being a Leader is one of our most rewarding roles. You can work directly with girls, supporting them and helping them to grow into confident young people.
To become a Leader you need to gain your Leadership Qualification. You will need to be 18 years old. If you are a Young Leader aged 16, you can start working on the Leadership Qualification but will not become a Leader until you are 18. (Young Leaders who are 14 – 16 years old can start the Young Leader Qualification – many of the modules in this will count towards the Adult Leadership Qualification.)
During the Leadership Qualification, you work with the girls, gaining practical experience. You will learn a great deal, in particular about:
- Your role in the programme
- The Five Essentials – to support the development of girls
- Running the unit
- Communicating with parents
- How to create a safe environment and more
Speak to your local Commissioner or Unit Leader to find out more. If you decide you want to do the Leadership Qualification, you will be assigned a Mentor through your Division Coordinator and will not be on your own – there are many people in guiding who are able to support you.
The Leadership Qualification should take about six months to complete.
